A Day in the Life of a Student Makeup Artist...

Alohaaa everyone, I have been so excited all week to write this post. This weekend I have been working as a Makeup Artist on The Arts by the Sea Festival Bournemouth, for those of you who have never heard of this before, it is a quirky art festival taking place on the beaches of Bournemouth, full of strange acts and performance's. I was so excited to be working on this performance as I also worked on the photo shoot for it back in May.

I thought I would write this post to show you what it is really like to be back stage of a show. People assume being a makeup artist is a glamorous job, but I wouldn't exactly call it glamorous. It involves a lot of waiting around between shows/filming, rushing around like a headless chicken before shows/filming, having 'mini-meltdowns' when the director yells 10 minutes and you still have 2 more models/actors waiting to have their faces touched up, but there are pits and peaks to every job, and if you love it this pits won't even matter. I love working under pressure, I find my best work has come from working under pressure.

The day before I was due on set I prepared my whole kit, at this time I hadn't been told exactly what I was going to be doing, so I knew I had to be fully prepared. It is not professional to turn up with incorrect equipment even if you haven't been told designs, you must be prepared for anything! I cleaned my brushes with IPA to ensure they were free from bacteria and clean. As you can see I have coloured stickers on my all items in my kit - when you are on set with other makeup artists things get muddled up as 9 times out of 10 the makeup area is small and previously I have lost items and they have been found in other people's kits who have accidentally picked it up - So always best to some how label your products.

I wanted to share this look because it was one of the most challenging looks I have done to date. As you can see she has some beautifully knitted ice creams cones in her head, these ice cream cones were so heavy that they could not balance on the head, they would just fall forward, plus to make matters harder, the actor's hair was fine and short, this is a 'mini-meltdown' moment for me!! Hahaa!! To make these ice cream cones stay, I sectioned the hair where the band would sit, used heated rollers to give volume on the back then the sections in front of band were used to wrap around the Alice band, tightly, then gripped like crazy, she had at least 50 grips around that Alice band that we managed to thankfully hide. Mission complete!!
The whole group together before the show.
